Why Connect with Ancient Healing Systems?

Why people are sensing a need to reconnect with Ancient Medical Systems is it provides us with knowledge, an understanding of preventative healing systems based on thousands of years’ study of nature, herbs and ourselves.

On the other hand according to an article in Vox.com on 2 September 2014  the health care system in American is broken.  They point to the following facts that explain what’s wrong with the American health care system.  These are:

  • Americans pay way, way, way too much for health care than anyone else.  They spend $2.8 trillion annually on healthcare.   That works out to $8,500 per person.
  • Doctors are paid when they provide lots of healthcare for unwell patients, not to keep people from getting sick.
  • The best way for the medical professional to make money is to prescribe lots of treatments
  • America is the only developed country with an employer-based health insurance. Based on the 1954 Internal Revenue Service Tax Code
  • The health care insurance companies profit margins tend to be relatively small.  By Yahoo Business estimates as a whole the sectors runs a 15.5% profit margin.
  • Primarily the bulk of income goes to drug companies and device manufacturers.  Typically run profit margins at about 20%.
  • In 1999 the Institute of Medicine published seminal report titled To Err is Human, which estimated that at least 44,000 patients and as many as 98,000 die in hospitals each year as results of medical errors.
  • A follow up study published in 2013 argued that medical errors contributed to deaths between 210,000 and 440,000 patients.
  • An issue with hospitals has as much to do with medical culture in which doctors rarely discuss their mistakes
  • On their own patient deaths are small events that often happen with little notice or fanfare, making them less noticeable than other events

Compare that with ancient medical systems in the Asian Region.  For example, in a state of health in Ayurveda, the equilibrium of the body is preserved so disease is prevented.  In a state of disease, treatment eliminates the imbalances and the body is restored to balance.  In ancient China, healers or Court doctors were paid to keep people healthy and not paid when they became sick.

Ayurveda is based on living a life that is wholesome, well and considered.  It identifies factors that help to keep the body in balance and minimise diseases.  For several thousand years ancient yogis, medical seers and practitioners in India studied the effects between nature, human beings and environment.  Other ancient teachings developed in parts of the world such as Greece, Tibet, China and various indigineous cultures globally.

They studied nature, the effects of herbs on common ailments, the ability to withstand natural elements and promote good health.   In many ways due to the isolation of their environments many healers were original Innovators, trailblazing new methodologies.   Some, of course, were also burnt at the stake as witches.  One of the fundamental philosophical differences in ancient medical cultures was that the goal of healing was not motivated  by money or wealth,  rather the goal of betterment of human kind, society, and connection with their spiritual nature.  They offered no quick fix but a total way of continuous lifestyle immersion.

Some of the  questions that needed, and need, deep thought are:

  • What effects did the environment have on the human body?
  • How did various lifestyles affect the quality of life?
  • What effect did certain foods and herbs have on behaviours and the mind?
  • How did the interactions between our thoughts and actions develop?
  • How did living particular lifestyles improve life or create diseases?
  • What were the important factors to observe to promote well being?

No one size fits all but an important question we need to be asking is:  “How can we live a healthy and well balanced life using holistic, natural methodologies with minimal side effects? “

There are 3 reasons why this is important.

  • It creates opportunities for growth, creativity, harmony and health
  • It helps to alleviate suffering, pain, addiction, destructive conflict
  • It promotes confidence, competence and healthy disagreement

This is not a recommendation for homogenisation where everyone is, thinks and lives the same way.   It is not about idealism, it is a form of practicality.  Of course, there will be differing points of view, differing methodologies, differing results, but ultimately people are seeking the same happiness, health, security, belonging and creativity benefits.  Ultimately, it is a matter of expressing our full human potential which lies beneath the surface waiting patiently to be integrated into life.

These fundamental concepts by psychologist, Abraham  Maslow were defined in his  Hierarchy of Needs.  By attending to each of our lower needs leads us to a higher place of Self Actualisation.

Many people worldwide are turning to ancient medical systems for solace, healing and knowledge. There is a growing interest in organic foods, healthy diets and quality lifestyles.   We have lost touch in many ways with nature and the support of living a balanced., harmonious life.  Perhaps it is not a coincidence that cooking shows have become the rage in the 21st Century.  Is it telling us we want to reconnect with nature?

People in general, and ourselves in particular, need to develop knowledge, wisdom and understanding not only about our lifestyles, food and diet, but understanding of the fundamental differences between various treatments and practices offered in order to make informed and considered choices about the way we want to lead our lives.
