Did you know oiling your body is good for you?

Most of us love to receive massages, but it is not always practical.  So what can you do?   According to a self-care Ayurvedic practice called Abhyanga massage you can give yourself a body massage with warmed oil in the comfort of your own home.

Abhyanga is an integral part of Ayurvedic daily practice used for overall health and well-being.  This self practiced oil massage moisturizes and nourishes your body and skin on all levels.

The soothing treatment specifically helps to pacify the Vata Dosha by calming the mind and body.  Qualities of Vata Dosha by its nature are dry and cool, and the balancing, lubricating quality of warm oil penetrating the skin brings balance to the whole body.

Giving yourself a massage first thing in the morning is refreshing, stimulating and great for your circulation.  It also relaxes the nervous system, improves digestion and helps you feel grounded.

Five to ten minutes massaging the entire body  two or three times per week is enough to start to feel accumulative effects.  It is most commonly practised prior to having a shower in the morning although you could give yourself a self oiling massage after the shower if you want.

Abhyanga Practice:

First you will need a good organic black sesame oil.  Half a cup is ample to start with unless you wish to spend more time on your massage.  Place the oil in a small container which you can suspend in a bowl of hot water to warm up.   Alternatively,  you can use a cooking pot to heat the oil.  Have some towels ready to dry at the end.

  • Warm the oil in the pot or small container.
  • Begin the massage with your right leg first.  Use long strokes from ankle to thigh moving up and down at least ten times.  Now repeat on the left leg

Tip:  Use smaller amounts of oil for each part of the body that you massage and it will be quickly absorbed by the skin.

  • Next use the same technique but massage your right arm first using long strokes up and down ten times.  Now repeat on the left arm.
  • Massage your lower back gently over the adrenal area and lower back.
  • Move up to the chest area and shoulders.  Gentle strokes over these areas.
  • Finish with a gentle circular face, neck and ear massage.

As you complete the self massage  allow time for the oil to penetrate the skin.  Wipe away any excess oil.
