My Grandma had a good life! And, she shared it but it was her cooking she imbued with love that was the best sharing. Long before I heard of Ayurveda, Yoga, Holistic Healing, Meditation my Grandma lived a healthy long life. She cooked the finest foods, brewed the finest coffee, made the finest teas and always, but always bought the freshest, cleanest, wholesome-est, tasty foods. The reddest strawberries, greenest lettuces, leanest meat, freshest fish, whitest potatoes, freshest herbs and spices, greenest apples, and creamiest milk.
Every day after school she would prepare the yummiest snack for her granddaughter. She spared no expense to get the best quality foods and the evidence for eating wholesome, fresh, tasty and home made cooking is the legacy she left behind of good health, a long life and a good life.
My Grandma was born in 1898 and lived for over 92 years. She didn’t know about conscious living, Ayurveda, yoga, meditation but she did know that diet and lifestyle were the key to a healthy, happy good life. She was incredibly robust, healthy, energetic woman who was married to my Grandpa for 60 years.
At home everything she cooked was made from scratch. If she was making a pastry she made it all. Of course I helped with the cooking and this certainly rubbed off on me. If it was a French Gateaux cake, then everything was made by hand. I spend hours and hours helping her make those cakes by hand. They were wonderful times, the smell of fresh bread, aromas coming from the pots and pans on the stove, crisp, fresh, greenest salads on the table waiting to be enjoyed, without exception they were the tastiest meals, and still remain fresh in my memory. Somewhere I have a few of her old recipes from over forty years ago. What knowledge and flair she brought to her cooking dates back to her mother and her mother’s mother, that’s over a century of tradition, culture and knowledge.
As we move from the 19th century to the 21st century in today’s society we see many people seeking long term solutions to their chronic ailments. Health conditions vary from being overweight to diabetes to depression, anxiety, insomnia, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. People are time poor, over worked and stressed out. Research shows a rise in over diagnosis and over prescription of drugs. Narrowly defined, over diagnosis occurs when people without symptoms are diagnosed with a disease that ultimately will not cause them to experience symptoms.* Reports from the US indicate rise in deaths from wrong medicines in hospitals causing concern. When I was growing up we did not have such high volume of chronic disease. Food was cooked at home, life was slower, we entertained ourselves and there was no take away foods.
With the advent of computers, disruptive technologies and workforce changes came the rise of professional services. I recall when the first computers were rolled out we were told they would free up our time and release us from drudgery of the home. Now we are so busy we have professional services for everything from cleaning the house, cutting the grass, minding the children and bringing in food take always. We now have Apps to order pizza, no need to walk across the street and wait. We now have courses for all aspects of our lives, how to be more creative, happier, healthier, fitter, better parents, better lovers, more successful, etc.
What does it mean? Have we lost touch with what is important in life. Have we lost touch with eating quality, tasty and highly nutritious home cooked meals? Are we distracted by technology, daily activities, work, family, schools, entertainment that we don’t have time. We don’t have time to rest. We don’t have time to think. We don’t have time to cook. We don’t have time for a good life.
Do we need to make time, slow down and create A Good Life for Sharing?
