In recent years people are becoming more health conscious and want to look good, feel healthy and happy.
Ayurveda or The Science of Life teaches how to create a healthy lifestyle and prevent disease by targeting the causes. Ayurveda hails from India and has been around since 4000BC. Ayurveda works with one’s lifestyle, promoting healthy diet, herbs, massage, well-adjusted daily routine, and yoga.
Ojas is a concept in Ayurveda that means vigour. It creates that balanced state within the body and mind of optimal health that needs to be nurtured and strengthened to remain strong. It is linked with a strong immune system. When we neglect living a healthy lifestyle, eating quality food, getting enough rest, the result is poor health, loss of vitality which leads to loss of ojas and illness.
So what are Ojas and what do they do for you?
According to Ayurveda principles Ojas are associated with the elixir of life.
Ojas are strongly linked with our digestive system. Through a complex process a healthy, efficient digestive system transforms fresh nutritious food into Ojas. Ojas is the essential vital energy of the body which is the by product of this healthy digestive system.
With the correct diet and lifestyle you can build up reserves and maintain good Ojas. That’s why it is important to maintain this quality of good food and lifestyle not to deplete Ojas.
Indication of strong Ojas includes clarity of thinking, capacity to manage stressful situations well and general feeling of well being and happiness. On the other hand low Ojas includes loss of energy, feeling ungrounded, easily distracted, fatigued and fluctuating mood swings.
Strong Ojas
As everyone is different according to Ayurveda one of the unique features is understanding various body types or Doshas. According to Ayurveda, we each have an individual body type. While our physical bodies are made up of bones, tissues, etc, our subtle body includes mind, intellect and emotions, each of us contains a mix of elements categorised as the three doshas. The three doshas are Kapha – earth and water, Pitta – fire and water, and Vata – air and ether. Keeping these elements balanced through diet, exercise, work, and lifestyle is essential for maintaining good health.
Siomilarly our subtle bodies contain three vital forces which are also based on these elements. One of these forces is Ojas which manifests as a result of high quality digestive processes and is the digestive essence of processing food, air, water, emotions and thought that spreads through the body. This subtle energy is Ojas.
According to Ayurveda Ojas is the foundation for the development of all systems in the body and is essential to life. In the Ashtanga Hrydayam, which is a compendium of the Ayurvedic System composed by Vagbhata, increased Ojas brings contentment, nourishment to the body and mind and is the strength behind our immune system that gives it stability. This subtle force or Ojas must be kept in balance for optimal health and disease prevention. While we cannot directly observe this force easily we can recognise symptoms of strong or weak Ojas within our system.
