The Art of Thinking, Ayurveda and the Mind

Ayurveda, a Sanskrit term, means the Science or Wisdom of Life.  Ayurveda is an ancient philosophy and holistic medical system based on deep understanding of physical, mental and emotional health. Unlike allopathic medicine in the West, it is not based on changing research but rather on eternal principles, which have been practiced for over two thousand years effectively.

Though Ayurveda medicine originated in the East, Ayurveda could not be more timely for the modern day Western society, where so many people suffer stress-related conditions which conventional medicine are unable to remedy without many side effects that go with the treatment.  Ayurveda is the most complete and oldest healing system known.

Based on the concept of three doshas or bio energies, the basic principle in Ayurveda is to have the mind and body at ease and in balance.  Harmony of the three doshas prevents disease from arising, offering natural remedies and practices that counteract imbalances in the body.

In Ayurveda psychological health is considered to depend upon positive, creative and constructive thinking rather than according to the emotions.  Thinking is considered an art, that is how to think is an art.  Many problems arising from faulty thinking lead to ill health.

According to teachings of Ayurveda and the mind, when thoughts arise, let them come, observe them, but don’t engage.  Fighting with your own thinking creates more tensions and emotional distress.  Rather observe your thinking and let the thoughts tell their own story.  This way you can develop a balance in your mind and body and befriend emotions such as anger, or fear, or jealously or frustration that arise.

Ayurveda teaches that awareness is the key.  When you accept your emotions without judgement then your whole life will change and you will have emotional health.  Your emotional health and psychological health depend upon the art of thinking.  Psychological health depends upon positive, constructive and creative thinking to bring balance and harmony.

The emphasis in Ayurveda is on the uniqueness of each person and helps the body and mind to protect and health itself.  Other Ayurveda treatments may include diet, nutrition, exercise, lifestyle, herbal medications, cleansing and detoxification, massage, yoga and cooking classes.
