
Research is beginning to show what traditional medicine has known for centuries, that spices and herbs are full of health benefits, in fact many higher in antioxidants that a lot of fruits.
While no one is suggesting that using spices and herbs is a substitute for a visit to your local medical practitioner, if you want to reap the benefits of nature’s medicine cabinet that cures everyday ailments, here are a six tips.
(1) Cumin
It’s antiseptic qualities aid digestion.
Use a few tablespoons of seeds, strain, leave to cool, then drink. A great way to improve sleep, simply add a few tablespoons of seeds, fried and mixed with mashed banana. Sleep like a baby.
(2) Black Cumin (Nigella)
Black cumin is known for its vitamin and mineral content that helps boost immunity.
A delicious way to use black cumin is to add it to bread, or sprinkle over root vegetables in cooking.
(3) Chilli
Chillies are high in antioxidants, Vitamins A, C and E. Chillies assist circulation and trigger release of endorphins, just like when we are exercising. Endorphins are nature’s pain killers. Chillies have anti spasmodic qualities and have been used in some cough medicines to ease congestion.
Best cooked with garlic and onion as a base for a myriad of tasty dishes. Can also be dried, chopped and sprinkled on salads.
(4) Cinnamon
Cinnamon is best known as an aid to mental clarity according to Ayurvedic medicine.
Cinnamon is a wonderful warming spice that can be added both to sweet and savoury dishes to enhance the flavours.
A great way to use as a pick me up cinnamon tea is to blend with whole cloves, a broken-up stick of cinnamon, honey and slices of fresh ginger. A delicious way to serve porridge is to mix one teaspoon of cinnamon and grated apple.
(5) Fennel seeds
Fennel seeds have a powerful anti inflammatory and antioxidant action. They help ease stomach problems such as irritable bowel syndrome.
It has long been held as a tradition in India to chew a few fennel seeds after a meal to help digestion and avoid bloating. Another way to help relief bloating is to add a teaspoon of fennel seeds to boiling water in a cup and drink to soothe the stomach.
(6) Cloves
It has long been known that chewing Cloves helps numb the area around an affected tooth. Cloves have excellent antibacterial and antiseptic qualities and as indicated great for a toothache.
