7 Ways to Manage Stress in the Workplace

Do you feel stressed out at work?  Here are 7 easy ways to create a more productive work environment while looking after your health.

  • Organise your Workspace    Is your desk messy?    Mess equals stress.    Many people find it challenging to focus on their job when they are disorganised.  The desk is filled with papers, cards, newsletters, old scraps.    And it’s no different with e-mail in boxes with hundreds of messages coming in daily.  The stress comes when you need to find an important document or email, or don’t even remember where you have left it.

TIP:  Get an organisation system in place for your workspace to help you put everything in place and in reach for work.

  • Organise Interruptions     Just getting down to complete a project when a colleague stops by your desk to chat.  You stop to read  another irrelevant, but interesting e-mail.  All time wasting activities that you have to reorient yourself again to get back on task.

TIP:  Make an effort to learn how to manage these interruptions and ignore distractions in the workplace.  This will help you significantly decrease your level of stress.

  • Adapt to Levels of Change    The only thing that stays constant is, Change.  Does change in your workplace make you anxious?  There’s a lot of uncertainty, expectations, office and staff politics and changes, new software or technology being installed, yet another systems change.

TIP:  Learn how to adapt quickly to change.   Expect the unexpected and be ready to manage change.

  • Take a Break    Sometimes making small changes, taking a break or stretching in your chair can help to alleviate stress.  Implement some relaxation or meditation exercises for 10 minutes, and it is wise to let others know what you are doing.  They may be interested as well.

TIP:  You can’t eliminate stress but you can manage it with a few appropriate exercises to release some tension.

  • Good Communication    Ineffective communication in the workplace often causes confusion, disagreement or passive conflict which results in stress.  People who are not giving clear messages, indirect requests, talking on their mobile so loudly you hear every word, or looking over your should adds to frustration and stress.

TIP:  Ask clarifying questions, make suggestions to improve the situation.  When people understand their behaviour is causing you stress, they might be willing to accommodate and change

  • Desk Layout    While you may not be able to move to another area of the office, you can improve your layout.  If you are in a cubicle with your back to the hallway, according to ancient system of Feng Shui, place a small mirror to see the space behind you, or get a swivel chair.

Tip:  Add a couple of personal items to your area to personalise your space.

  • Is Your Attitude is Showing?   You might not realise it but your attitude could be causing you stress.  If you are feeling tired, stressed or frustrated try to find out what is causing you stress.  We cannot control others but we are in charge of ourselves.  This helps reduce stress levels, lowers blood pressure, and increase positive feelings.

TIP:  You can’t be the best at everything, but you can be the best at everything you do.
