Ancient Knowledge for Modern Times

Why are some people more susceptible to diseases when others are not even when they eat similar foods –  the state of body health varies from one person to another.   Some people with good habits get sick while others with poor habits appear immune to disease. According to  ancient knowledge of Ayurveda for modern times it is the amount of Doshas produced that varies from one person to another which is the reason why one body is different from another like weight, strength and energy.

According to Ayurveda, the Science of Life or Longevity helps improve health and prevent disease in achieving a long life.   The basic philosophy of Ayruveda is based on the five element theory, (Panchamahabutas)  This theory states that the universe and human beings are connected through their make up consisting of the five elements, namely Air, Vayu;  Space, Akash;  Earth, Prithvi; Fire Agni and Water, Jal.   These elements combine to form biological humours called Doshas.   There are 3 principle Doshas, namely Vata, Pitta and Kapha that are responsible for sustaining  the body and mind.  These Doshas act on the body in a way that influences tissues namely the Dhatus with various physiological functions of the body.  The end products produced by the body’s various functions are called Malas.

How does disease occur?

According to Charaka Samhita, Ayurveda text circa 300 BCE,  people do not get sick due to bacteria or infection but as a result of three main causes.  These three basic causes upset the fine balance among the bio-regulating forces of the body, namely the Doshas;  Pitta, Kapha and Vata.    When these Doshas get aggravated people become susceptible  to opportunistic diseases resulting in health problems.  Care needs to be taken to minimise the effects of these factors to maintain a fine balance among  bio-regulating factors to prevent disease and maintain good health.

These three basic causes are

  • Misuse of senses with their objects
  • Wrong use of Will
  • Effects of Time

Senses

We use our senses to determine the types of food we eat, the types of particular lifestyle we follow, the types of environment we choose to live in, the types of people we choose to associate with.  It is through our senses of taste, smell, touch, sight and sound that these factors enter the body  and mind.  Misuse of our senses, behaviour, lifestyle, choices lead to health problems.

Will

Will or Prajnaparadha, we wrote about  in a previous post.  Prajnaparadha or Will are crimes or misuse against wisdom, referring to the human condition, its actions, experiences, behaviour and thinking.  Wrong use of Will relates to our psyche and results in either excessive, defective, distorted states of body and mind.

Time

This includes the life cycle from birth to death, abnormal  changes and variations in the seasons and environmental seasonal changes that affect our Doshas.  The  effects on our body and mind are inevitable for natural processes of aging take affect over time.  To minimise these effects of Time upon the body, Ayurveda follows certain methods that include seasonal routines, rejuvenation therapies,  advice how to live a happy life, well balanced life.

How is Ayurveda different to other modalities?
