Healthy routines or Dinacharya, Dina meaning ‘daily’ in Sanskrit and Charya meaning ‘following’ or ‘moving’, is a concept in Ayurveda that recommends tuning our bodies into nature’s cycles that establishes balance in life and promotes good health. It calms Vata and Pitta Doshas, aids digestion and generates self discipline.
- Wake up Early in the Morning
Take advantage of the good quality energy in nature at this time of the morning which brings freshness to the senses. Take a moment to bring positive thoughts for the day before you get up. - Freshening exercise
On getting up take a couple of minutes to exercise and cleanse the aura Standing straight shake both hands vigorously, then shake the right leg, left leg. Finally shake the whole body then gently bring hands down to the feet continuously shaking all over. Come back up. Rest. Make two fists bring them to the chest, inhale and release hands in the air and exhale. - Refresh Face, Mouth and Eyes
Rinse your face with cool water, rinse out your mouth. Splash your eyes with cool water and gently rub the eyelids. Blink several times and rotate eyes in all directions. - Scrape Tongue
Use a tongue scraper or back of teaspoon to gently clean the tongue. This helps stimulate internal organs and digestion. - Clean Teeth
Brush your teeth with a soft toothbrush and natural toothpaste. - Gargle
Gargle water with couple of drops of warm sesame oil to strengthen teeth, gums and remove wrinkles from cheeks. Hold oil in mouth for about a minute, swish it vigorously then spit it out and gently massage gums with a finger. - Bowel Movement
Daily movement is optimal. Improper diet and lifestyle can cause constipation. You can drink glass of warm water with 1 teaspoon of #Triphala to help. - Drink glass of hot water
Add ¼ tsp natural apple cider vinegar and ¼ tsp honey. Tea or coffee first thing in the morning will drain kidney energy and stress the adrenals. - Chewing
Chewing in the morning stimulates the liver, stomach and improves digestive fire. Take a small handful of sesame seeds or a couple of dried dates and piece of dried coconut meat. After eating brush teeth without toothpaste. - Nasal Drops
Pour few drops of warm ghee or sesame oil in each nostril in the morning. This aids lubrication and cleanses the sinuses. - Karna Purana for Ears
Placing 5 drops of warm sesame oil in each ear can help conditions such as ringing in the ears, excess ear wax, poor hearing and lockjaw all due to Vata in the ears. You can also give the ears a ‘light dusting’ with herbs suitable for your constitution. Wrap it in a few layers of cheesecloth then tap against the ear.
Vata: Mahanarayan oil, dust with Dashamoola powder Pitta:
Brahmi oil, dust with Sandalwood powder
Kapha: Neem oil, dust with Vacha powder - Abhyanga Self Massage
After showering in the morning apply warm sesame oil to keep the skin soft, stimulate circulation and protect the joints. Gently massage sesame oil over legs, arms, lower back, front, face and neck. If you have time oil your hair and then wash out. You can also oil your body before bed. This helps induce sound sleep. - Daily Exercise
A choice of regular exercise like #yoga, tai chi, kung fu daily improves circulation, strengthens body and enhances endurance. It helps relaxation and improves sleep at night. After exercise take a few minutes to relax and then do some deep breathing exercises. - Breakfast
Breakfast can be lighter in the hotter months or if you agni is low and a heavier breakfast in the winter months. Types of meals for different doshas. Vata: Should be nourishing, warm spiced breakfast. No cold or raw food. Pitta: Cereal, warmed. Kapha: No meat, yogurt, milk or cheese. Do not mix fruit (fructose) with dairy products (lactose)
