Part 2
The question is ‘How does Ayurveda provide the knowledge base of healing’?
Of course this is a complex question, and there are volumes and volumes of well documented evidence for the medical aspects of healing with Ayurveda. It has a rich history reaching back 3000 to 5000 years. Of course the devil is in the details.
However what we do have is a growing body of knowledge from ancient times that informs health practices. This body of knowledge is based upon the learnings, teachings and observations of and within nature that is the basis of Ayurveda. Ayur Veda meaning the Science of Life.
According to Ayurveda the root cause of a malady needs to be addressed and the body and mind brought back into balance. In Ayurveda we do not focus on symptoms, nor treat symptoms in isolation to the whole.
What does this mean?
Through observations over centuries the principles informing Ayurveda Science of Life suggest tapping into the restorative powers of the natural world as they can boost mental acuity, creativity and promote health and wellness.
Working with nature, and not against nature is going towards health. Modern technology is amazing delivering clever ways to support humans on this earth. What is important to remember that technology may also be the demise of humans as we know them.
This is a double edged sword and this article does not address that question. However what we do notice is that with advances in technology many problems are increasing in society such anxiety, mental tension, high stress.
Is this coincidental?
No matter which we look at it the evidence is clear while we are living longer we are getting sicker.
What has to do with Ayurveda?
According to the principles of Ayurveda the movement of the 5 elements, that is Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Space or Mahapanchabutas make up the universe are found in our bodies. These elements are structured and have specific pathways of action. In the body they go along a chronological pathway from Space, Air, Fire, water and finally Earth. This is because where there is disintegration of Earth, Water, Fire (heat) is released from the matter, then air is separated and lastly space is separated from the disintegrating matter.
When these elements are out of balance, whether in the universe or whether within ourselves, this provides a breeding ground for malfunction. In life this can result in chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart problem and obesity.
Ayurveda approaches healing from first principles. Bring the body back into balance.
How?
This is a huge question nevertheless Ayurveda provides a combined approach to health via lifestyle, dietary management and natural therapies. Ayurveda is a medicinal lifestyle.
From an Ayurveda point of view they believe that the power dwelling in the universe also is found within human beings, Pindi to Bramhandi. It is suggested use this knowledge to explore it.
Ayurveda works on balancing and bringing the elements or doshas back into alignment.
Our body and organs are influenced by five basic elements:
For example,
- The Kapha or Earth element governs hard structures in our body such as nails, bones, teeth and hair.
- The Water element influences liquids, hormones, urine, perspiration, saliva, abundance of liquid in various part of the body.
- The Pitta or Fire element influences heat, eyesight, energy for digestion, metabolism and glow of the body.
- The Vata or Air element influences all movement in the body such as osophegaus, eyelids, reflexes, inspiration and impulses.
- The Space element influences voice, ears, air, accumulating space within the body.
When we chew food and then swallow the solid pieces from the food earth pieces are separated first, then liquid as water separation, heat is released from the process and finally air and space disintegrate or separate from the food.
Consequently when looking for the root cause of a problem it’s worth thinking about balancing the elements. It would be useful to think of which things to eliminate that are associated with which element.
Understanding the sequence of the elements means treatments can be aligned to selective disorders to maintain balance through diet, lifestyle, herbs and exercise.
Ayurveda suggests to maintain a daily health and seasonal routine which indirectly works on balancing the elements in the body as a way of health and well being maintenance of the body, mind and emotions.
