3 Ways to Get a Good Night’s Sleep

How many times do we toss and turn and barely get a good night’s sleep.  Not getting a good night’s sleep has repercussions.  What happens the next day? Even more irritability, poor diet, not eating well, more stress and so the cycle repeats itself.  Already feeling tired when its time to go to bed we find it even harder to get to sleep, or wake frequently during the night.

What causes Insomnia?

What is the best way to deal with these restless sleeping patterns?  What is often unknown is that until the root cause is addressed sleep will continue to be interrupted.

According to Ayurveda poor sleep, tossing and turning, is due to imbalance of the dosha Vata.  Vata Dosha is  the air element.  Air, as we can understand, is light, changeable, cool, dry, wind and moving.  Hence we find these similar qualities in the  Vata  Dosha.

To improve sleeping habits, Ayurveda suggests we cultivate the opposite qualities, that is,  warmth, heaviness, oilyness, groundedness, and stillness.  In this way we bring balance to the Vata Dosha.

What happens when Vata Dosha is disturbed?   The nervous system is derailed and the flow of energy is interrupted causing restlessness and insomnia at night.

Factors affecting the nervous  system most commonly are too much stress and over thinking.  This brings too much prana or air movement upward into the head and is not released resulting in a lot of activity of thought, preventing rest and sleep.   To remove these causes we need to change our habits.

How to create 3 healthy habits to get a good night’s sleep and calm Vata energy.

  1. Wind down in the evenings, relax your nervous system with soft music or candlelight.  No stimulants after dark.  This includes caffeine and sugar hits.
  2. Drink a cup of warm milk sprinkled with nutmeg before bed Unclutter your mind.   Spend a few minutes eyes closed, relax the mind
  3. Put a few drops of sesame oil onto the sole of your feet and top of the heard.  Massage in gently.

Aid Sleep by Reducing Your Stress

Declutter, Re-Tune Your Mind.  In Ayurveda Vata Dosha, or energy, is also responsible for quick thinking, creativity and imagination.  But when we overuse these qualities we create imbalances in the body and become stressed.  We need to reduce stress to bring our body back into balance.

Causes of stress are many and different stressors affect people in different ways. However when we begin to prioritise and evaluate what is important in our lives we can understand what changes enable us to be more focused, less stressed and aligned to what we want to achieve.

Simply do this.  At the beginning of each month  take time to evaluate where you are in your life,  then take the next step to make the changes you want to aligned with your decisions.  We need good stress in our lives to be motivated, but we need to  learn when it’s time to put the brakes on and reduce unnecessary stress in our lives.
